Not All Witchcraft Looks Like a Spell: Recognizing Control, Mixture, and Pride Hidden in the Church

Witchcraft doesn’t always look like what we expect.

It doesn’t chant under the moon or burn sage in secret.
It doesn’t sit in circles with crystals or cast spells in candlelight.

Sometimes, it preaches.
Sometimes, it prophesies.
Sometimes, it prays in tongues — but moves in manipulation.

There’s a counterfeit spirit that tries to move within the Church.

It looks like power — but it’s rooted in pride.
It sounds spiritual — but it bears the fruit of control.
It claims to be prophetic — but it causes confusion, disunity, and fear.

And we need to call it what it is.

The Bible is clear:

“Rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft.” – 1 Samuel 15:23

“My Story: Why I Didn’t Chase Prophecy for 10 Years”

I didn’t run after prophecy.

For nearly a decade, I intentionally chose not to chase prophetic gifting or platform. Instead, I was led by the Holy Spirit to pursue something far deeper — discernment.

But not discernment in the way many think. I wasn’t learning to discern demons or motives first — I was learning to discern the will of the Father. I was learning to hear His voice, His ways, and His heartbeat.

I was learning what it meant to hear Him clearly — and not mix my own desires, pain, or opinions into what I thought was "God speaking."

During that time, I sought healing. Not just emotional healing, but spiritual detox. I had to face the control and manipulation I used to hold onto because I didn’t know any other way. I wasn’t a gossiper or backroom schemer, but I did try to influence situations through pressure, perfectionism, and people-pleasing.

It was hard to admit. But it was necessary.

Because any form of influence that tries to control an outcome outside of God’s will — no matter how spiritual it looks — is not prophetic, it’s manipulation.

And control, at its root, is a form of witchcraft.

I Came Out of the New Age

Before I came into true intimacy with Jesus, I had been exposed to New Age practices. I was drawn to the supernatural but didn’t know the source I was tapping into. I experimented with things that felt spiritual, but were actually rooted in deception — things like energy reading, manifesting, “intuition,” and spiritual shortcuts that bypassed the Cross.

That’s why I didn’t chase prophecy for 10 years.

I knew how dangerous it could be to mix soulish power or spiritual curiosity with the prophetic. I needed healing, not just gifting. I chose instead to cultivate the gift of discernment, because I didn’t want to be led by anything that didn’t originate from the will and voice of the Father.

Control, Mixture, and Manipulation Are Counterfeits

At first glance, control and mixture can feel like spiritual strength or maturity. They masquerade as faith, boldness, or even prophetic authority. But in reality, they are counterfeits—spirits that work against God’s Kingdom by distorting His ways and timing. Control tries to force God’s hand. It pushes outcomes instead of trusting God’s perfect will and timing. Mixture blends God’s truth with worldly or occult ways, creating confusion and spiritual compromise. Manipulation twists God’s Word or prophetic words to serve personal agendas rather than God’s purposes.

These counterfeit spirits produce fruit that looks impressive but ultimately leads to:

  • Division instead of unity

  • Anxiety instead of peace

  • Pride instead of humility

  • Fear instead of faith

  • Confusion instead of clarity.

Jesus said:

“You will know them by their fruits.” – Matthew 7:16

So, what does witchcraft really look like in the Church?

🔥 1. Control

  • Forcing outcomes and calling it “intercession”

  • Using “God told me…” to pressure or direct others

  • Leading from anxiety instead of peace

🐍 2. Manipulation

  • Using Scripture to back your personal opinions

  • Delivering “prophetic words” that serve your agenda

  • Disguising emotion as revelation

👄 3. Slander or Character Assassination

  • Speaking about people under the banner of “concern”

  • Spreading mistrust without spiritual authority

  • Cutting others down while pretending to protect the Church

⚔️ 4. False Authority

  • Operating without covering or maturity

  • Resisting correction

  • Carrying revelation but avoiding accountability

That’s not prophetic — it’s pride dressed in spiritual language.

🚫 5. An Unteachable Spirit

  • Hearing from God — but unwilling to be led

  • Giving correction — but never receiving it

  • Confusing boldness with rebellion

There Is No Such Thing as a “Christian Witch”

The concept of a “Christian witch” is a false teaching that attempts to blur the line between holiness and sin. It is a mixture of light and darkness, attempting to serve both God and self-will, claiming spiritual authority while operating in rebellion. This deception appeals to those hungry for supernatural power but lacking spiritual foundation. It seduces by promising control, influence, or faster results, but it always leads to confusion, bondage, and eventual judgment.

Jesus taught us that:

“A house divided against itself cannot stand.” — Mark 3:24

No genuine spiritual authority can be built on a foundation that embraces both God and occult powers.

The Kingdom of God Is About Submission, Not Control

True Christian spiritual power flows from submission to God’s will and the leading of the Holy Spirit. It is marked by:

  • Humility instead of pride

  • Love instead of manipulation

  • Faith instead of control

Witchcraft, in contrast, seeks to control, manipulate, and coerce outcomes apart from God’s sovereign will.

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” — James 4:7

This submission is incompatible with any form of occult practice, which opens doors to demonic influence.

There is no middle ground or blending allowed in God’s Kingdom when it comes to witchcraft. Christians are called to walk in holiness, truth, and freedom — embracing the Spirit of God and rejecting all forms of spiritual rebellion and deception.

The choice is clear:

  • Serve God fully and walk in the freedom of the Spirit, or

  • Turn to occult practices that lead to bondage and separation from God.

Jesus invites us into abundant life and true power — never counterfeit authority.

🕊️ The Real Fruit of the Spirit

Many desire the power and gifts of the Spirit, but the Holy Spirit’s primary work is to transform our character. True power flows from purity.

“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” — Galatians 5:22–23

This fruit is the proof that the Spirit is active in our lives. Without it, ministry—even prophetic words—can become empty or even harmful.

Jesus warned:

“Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.” — Matthew 7:19

Clean oil flows from a clean vessel. A prophetic word from a heart filled with pride or impatience is not pure oil—it will not bring lasting blessing.

Fruitless ministry produces division, fear, and confusion instead of peace and unity.

The fruit of the Spirit grows as we abide in Christ, submit to His correction, and walk in humility and self-control.

When love and gentleness flow through your life, your prophetic voice carries clean oil—powerful, pure, and life-giving.

The Lord Delivered Me… From Mixture

Jesus didn’t just deliver me out of New Age deception — He walked with me through the refining.

He fathered me.

He placed safe, aligned leaders around me.
He taught me to discern His will, not just spiritual atmospheres.
And He showed me how to surrender every mindset that was still shaped by old systems.

I had to:
🛑 Repent of control
🛑 Release manipulation
🛑 Yield to covering
🛑 Learn to move with the Spirit, not just gifting

And that’s when the clean fire came. The kind that doesn’t burn out — but burns bright.

How to Identify and Overcome Control and Mixture

If you recognize control, mixture, or manipulation in your life or ministry, it’s a red flag that you need to realign with God’s heart.

Take these steps today:

  • Repent and renounce control and manipulation. Confess where you’ve tried to force outcomes or influence situations apart from God’s leading.

  • Submit your desires and plans fully to God. Practice daily surrender, inviting the Holy Spirit to lead your decisions and prophetic words.

  • Seek accountability. Find trusted leaders or mentors who will lovingly speak truth into your life and call you to purity and humility.

  • Test every word and impression. Measure prophetic words and impressions against Scripture and the peace of God. Avoid quick assumptions or jumping to conclusions.

  • Cultivate patience and trust. Learn to wait on God’s timing without pushing or rushing His plans. Trust that He is working behind the scenes even when you don’t see it.

  • Pray for cleansing and fresh fire. Ask the Holy Spirit to purify your heart, burn away mixture, and fill you with boldness rooted in love and truth.

Why This Matters!

Control, mixture, and manipulation not only harm your spiritual walk but can damage others and the wider Church. True Kingdom authority flows from submission, humility, and purity—not from pressure, fear, or hidden agendas.

Remember, the enemy loves to use counterfeit spiritual power to create confusion and division. But when you choose to walk in God’s ways with a surrendered heart, you release clean, powerful fire that brings healing, unity, and breakthrough.
